THE LONG WAY SOUTH

Charleston to Kiawah, by water

Some journeys are worth taking slowly.

Leave Charleston behind and spend the afternoon making your way south aboard Gatsby, following the waterways through winding creeks, open stretches of river and miles of Lowcountry marsh toward Kiawah.

Settle in. Pour a drink. Have lunch aboard. Watch the city disappear and the landscape open up around you. With only six guests, the boat is yours, plenty of room for good food, good conversation and nowhere else you need to be.

Make Kiawah the destination, or make the journey the entire point. Stop for lunch, celebrate something, bring friends, or simply take the long way because you can.

A beautiful boat. A few of your favorite people. And one very good way to spend an afternoon.

itinerary

11:00 AM I STEP ABOARD
Meet Gatsby in Charleston and make yourself at home. Bags down, first drinks poured, lines off. The city skyline provides the backdrop as you head out across the harbor.

11:30 AM I LEAVE THE CITY BEHIND
Cruise toward the Ashley River and into Wappoo Creek. Charleston begins to disappear behind you as Gatsby trades church steeples and city streets for docks, marsh and open water.

12:00 PM I THROUGH ELLIOTT CUT
Pass through Elliott Cut and emerge onto the Stono River, where the view opens dramatically. From here, it’s south, past Johns Island, waterfront homes and long stretches of Lowcountry marsh.

12:30 PM I LUNCH IS SERVED
Settle around the table as Gatsby continues down the Stono. A long lunch, something cold to drink, perhaps a little caviar, and nothing on the agenda except watching the Lowcountry go by.

1:30 PM I THE STONO
The afternoon unfolds at Gatsby pace. Music, another glass, dolphins if they decide to join you, and miles of river ahead. This is the part of Charleston most people never see.

2:00–2:30 PM I HELLO, KIAWAH
Arrive by water and step ashore at Kiawah, or stay aboard a little longer and let the river be the destination.
